About UsHistory of Wakulla County Senior Citizens In 1970 volunteers began providing Telephone Reassurance from a borrowed space at the Wakulla County Court House. The Board of Directors was established in 1970. At this time the Board of Commissioners, local churches, organizations and private individuals, along with program income served to make the cash match, it is a tough program. In 1971 WCSC moved into the Womens’ Club building behind Hudson Park. The addition of Recreation in the form of ceramics and Home Delivered Meals came about at this time. The meal drivers drove to Tallahassee to pick up the dinner meals to serve our senior citizens in Wakulla County. In 1980-1981, the Wakulla County Commissioners donated a piece of property on Magnolia Street. A Federal grant was obtained and the Senior Citizens organization was established. During this time Title IIIB- OAA (Older Americans Act) grant monies from the Federal Government were established for the operation of the organization. In 1982, the State of Florida introduced Community Care for the Elderly (CCE). The state provided monies, including the 10% cash match. Services were increased to enable the home-bound seniors to receive needed services to the elderly, age 60 and over. In 1987, the Senior Center was designated Transportation Coordinator for Wakulla County by the Board of Commissioners. This program was in the process of expanding to cover all the clients that are not sponsored in the county to receive assistance with medical transportation. In 2002, Wakulla County Senior Citizens Center opened the doors of newly constructed senior facility containing approximately 9,000 square feet. The new center includes a large dining area with a kitchen equipped to prepare home cooked meals daily and a large multipurpose room that can be portioned into smaller activity rooms. Funding for this project was provided by donations from local business and citizens. Wakulla Bank also provided a loan. In June 2006, Wakulla Trace Apartments opened their facility that provides housing for low-income elderly and disabled adults. The primary goal of Wakulla County Senior Citizens is to enable seniors to age in a senior friendly and secure environment in order to prevent premature admission to nursing homes or other institutions. Many long term strategies include in-home services such as meals-on-wheels, homemaking, respite and emergency response systems. Educating seniors on such issues as scams, diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases, nutrition, personal care and many others. Health screenings are provided for sight, blood pressure, bone density and other issues that impair their well-being. |
